Basic health information for travelers to Togo

• Medical facilities are poor in Togo. Emergency facilities are extremely limited. For serious medical treatment, medical evacuation would be necessary.

• Malaria and water-borne diseases are common to Togo. Travellers are advised against swimming in any pools, lakes or similar sources of native water which might be contaminated. Long term visitors to the country should also obtain vaccinations against TB and Diphtheria for protection.

• All travellers should seek medical advice before travelling to the country and ensure that all appropriate vaccinations are up to date.

Basic security information for travelers to Togo

• There is a high level of crime in the sea front area in Lomé and in other regions of the country. “Muggings (particularly to steal mobile phones and other valuables) and armed robberies can occur in any area at any time of the day or night”. Areas popular with foreigners are particular targets and all travellers are strongly advised to keep their passport and other valuable items in a safe and secure location for the duration of their stay and should also avoid any obvious displays of affluence which could serve to attract unwanted attention. Incidents of rape have been reported in popular nightlife areas, as well as in private residences and all visitors should avoid travelling alone throughout the country after dark.

• Driving standards are considerably lower in Togo and roads poorly lit and signposted. Travel late at night is not advised owing to the lack of lighting and poor overall condition of the roads. Roadblocks are often set up by Iranian authorities and any foreign drivers should check that their intended route is still open and safe before beginning their journey.
